Step into a Sanctuary Woven by Time and Nature: Sandiaoling Historic Trail

This weekend, taking advantage of the clear weather, we drove to Ruifang for a spontaneous getaway 🌿. Surrounded by mountains and winding streams, this area hides countless ancient trails and waterfall paths. Among them, the most surprising features are the unique pothole formations and Taiwan's only train station inaccessible by car—Sandiaoling Station 🚉.

Following the Sandiaoling Cross-Mountain Historic Trail at the foot of the mountain, we walked along what was once a vital route connecting local residents to the outside world. At the trailhead, an information board explains the origin of the place's name—legend has it that Spanish explorers named this area Santiago when they first arrived. As we ventured further, a sense of being "called by Santiago" stirred within us.

We started our journey from the now-closed Shuoren Elementary School, passing by "Hegu Waterfall," "Motian Waterfall," and "Pipadong Waterfall." The sound of flowing water and lush greenery accompanied us along the 5-kilometer trail, filled with the refreshing scent of forest phytoncides and cool breezes from the streams. Even at noon, the summer sun's heat was barely felt ☀️. For those with more stamina, the trail extends to Fude Temple atop the mountain.

Since we drove here, we chose to turn back at Pipadong Waterfall. After descending, we returned to the Shuoren settlement, where we enjoyed a delicious and affordable lunch at a local eatery, followed by a bowl of refreshing brown sugar shaved ice to perfectly conclude our half-day hike 🍧.

Sandiaoling boasts the historical footprints of the Tamsui-Kavalan Trails, the industrious spirit of the mining era, the natural wonder of pothole formations, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque scenes of railways weaving through the landscape. This is not just a small mountain town but a convergence of stories and memories—a perfect blend of adventure and leisurely exploration.
