This trip to Ruifang, New Taipei City, is a journey through the mountains and mining industry, each stop imbued with a rich sense of history. This itinerary is recommended for those who want to experience both the natural beauty and the culture of the old mining area—a truly hidden gem. Especially at the Sandiaoling Café, a pour-over cup paired with the mountain views is so captivating it's worth almost missing the train!

New Taipei City Miners' Memorial Hall (formerly the Miners' Bathhouse at the Main Mine of Ruisan Mining)
You'd be remiss if you didn't get off the train in Ruifang! The former Miners' Bathhouse at the Main Mine of Ruisan Mining has been transformed into the Miners' Memorial Hall, where the interior recreates the life of the former miners after their shift. Admission is free, and the afternoon hours are less crowded, so you can also enjoy the local history of black gold.

Real Experience Tips
1. Due to the frequent subway transfers and train schedules, it's recommended to confirm your return time before your trip, otherwise you'll end up rushing to catch the train like I did. ^_^
2. The Sandiaoling Kengkou Café is incredibly charming. You often have to wait for a table on weekend afternoons, but the window seats are worth the wait. I recommend leaving time to savor it and not miss your train.
3. The Houtong Coal Mine Museum and the Miners' Memorial Hall are within walking distance across the Ruisan Coal Transport Bridge. The scenery along the way is perfect for outdoor portraits.
Food & Transportation Recommendations
Transportation: From Taipei Main Station, it takes 40 minutes to reach Ruifang or Houtong by shuttle bus. It's recommended to book your train schedule in advance, as popular routes are often fully booked.
Food: Local snacks are available in front of Houtong Station and in the small village of Sandiaoling. The hand-poured and handmade desserts at Kengkou Café are highly recommended. In Ruifang Old Street, you can stop by for taro balls, meatballs, and grass cakes.
Tips for the Trip
The trails and scenic areas in Ruifang District are mostly hilly, so it's recommended to wear good walking shoes or sneakers. The route is often sunny and there are no sheltered buildings, so remember to bring sunscreen. Restrooms and drinking water are limited in the mining area, so please bring your own.
