The word Ponagar in the name of the tourist destination Ponagar Tower Nha Trang means "mother of the land" in the Cham language. The legend of Ponagar Tower originated when this structure was built from around the 8th - 13th century.

This pagoda is associated with the goddess Thien Y Ana. For the local people here, this goddess is the one who taught them how to plow and sew. Perhaps this is also the reason why this structure is extremely important to the religious activities of the local people in the beautiful land of Nha Trang.
