Nikko Toshogu Shrine - A World Heritage Site with Over 400 Years of History

Toshogu Shrine is actually the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is also a shrine dedicated to Ieyasu. So why is it called Toshogu? It means "the shrine that illuminates from the east", which means that after Ieyasu's death, he became a guardian deity, illuminating all of Japan from the east side of the Japanese archipelago and protecting everyone.

After Ieyasu passed away, his son Hidetada built the Toshogu Shrine. I heard that it was a little different from now and was more simple.

After that, the descendants of Ieyasu spent two years from 1934 to 1936 to rebuild the shrine to its current luxurious and magnificent appearance.

To this day, Toshogu Shrine has always been a very important place for the Japanese.

Due to its unique architecture, historical religion, and unique Japanese beliefs that have been passed down to this day, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
