I just found out about a truly breathtaking secret in Xinjiang's Yili region: the Mengket Ancient Trail! Located in Nileke County, this pristine destination offers an incredible blend of snow-capped mountains, hot springs, grasslands, and serene lakes. It sounds like a place where beauty genuinely takes my breath away.
Best Time to Visit & Costs:
Best Time: They say June to October is perfect. That means I could catch vibrant summer wildflower meadows or the golden, fairytale landscapes of autumn!
Fees: Right now, the entrance ticket is free (temporarily)!
Shuttle Bus: CNY 30 per person.
Self-driving: CNY 200 per vehicle (limited to 5 people; an additional CNY 40 per person if I have more).
Why Mengket Ancient Trail is a Must-Visit for Me:
Untouched Beauty: Since it only started charging fees last year, it's pretty much untouched by commercialization. That means I can experience its truly original, wild landscapes with hardly any crowds!
Diverse Scenery: I'm already picturing the visual feast! The trail promises an incredible variety of landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, glaciers, vast grasslands, natural hot springs, tranquil lakes, and dense forests. Every turn sounds like a "wallpaper-worthy" view.
Beginner-Friendly Trekking: This is great for me, as I'm more of a casual hiker. The classic route can be done in 4-5 days, and best of all, it doesn't require any river crossings, which makes it super accessible.
Transportation & Itinerary Tips:
Driving/Car Rental:
I can get there from Yining to Nileke County, then take a car to the scenic area (around CNY 45 per person).
Once inside the scenic area, I can self-drive 21 kilometers from the Visitor Center to the Snowfield Hot Spring. Along that route, there are six major viewing platforms – perfect for soaking in the scenery and taking photos!
