Exploring Spring in Ningbo: The Serene Beauty of Free-Entry Tiantong Temple

Visit Tiantong Temple in spring during Qingming in Jiangnan.
The silhouette of this thousand-year-old temple gradually emerges among green mountains and waters.
Bronze bells at the eaves appear and disappear in the mist, like the jeweled ornaments dropping from Buddha's lowered brows. With each mountain breeze, they ring out ethereal Sanskrit chimes throughout the valley.
Birds perch motionlessly in front of this Buddhist sanctuary - I first thought they were artificial. On the back mountain, I encountered an injured hedgehog. Though I wanted to help, I felt helpless, hoping to bring it to the temple for the master monks to care for...

📿Buddhist Sanctuary of the Southeast
The temple is surrounded by a forest park with ancient towering trees (like "Tang Cypress") and crystal-clear streams, featuring ten scenic spots including "Deep Path Around Pines" and "Exquisite Heaven-Carved." Built in 300 CE during the Western Jin Dynasty's Yongkang era, it has over 1,700 years of history and is known as the "Buddhist Sanctuary of the Southeast."
📜Zen Status:
Became one of the five great Chan Buddhist temples during the Southern Song Dynasty, and is revered as the ancestral temple by Japan's Soto School.
🏺Architectural History:
Repeatedly destroyed by fires and wars throughout history. Most existing buildings were rebuilt during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with restoration led by Master Yuanying during the Republic of China period.
