Lake Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, the path of the gods

Lake Suwa is a quiet lake located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is famous for being the model for anime, movies, and computer games. It is an atmosphere that anime lovers are very familiar with.

There is a legend about the gods crossing the lake. People living around the lake believe in the journey of the god Takeminakata, who resides at Suwa Taisha Shrine (諏訪大社), to cross the frozen lake to meet the goddess Yasakatome, who resides at the secondary shrine on the opposite side or north of the lake. You can only cross during the winter when it is icy.

There is also a naturally occurring hot spring here. It occurs when the surface of the lake is frozen during winter, but the water below is still hot and flows, causing pressure from below to form cracks in the ice about 30 cm high. In this area, there is a place where you can soak your feet for free with hot spring water from the pond.

On days when the weather is good and the sky is clear, you can even see Mt. Fuji. There are also other activities to do around the lake, such as taking a boat ride, boating, cycling, or having a picnic while enjoying the lake view. Just this is enough to make you happy.
