Okayama: Castles, Gardens, and the Legend of Momotaro

Often overlooked but full of charm, Okayama is a fantastic stop between Osaka and Hiroshima, a city where history, nature, and folklore meet.

The highlight? Korakuen Garden, one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. It is the kind of place where every path leads to a perfectly framed view: tea houses, koi ponds, cherry trees, and open lawns that change mood with the seasons.

Next door stands Okayama Castle, known as the “Crow Castle” for its striking black exterior. Rebuilt but elegant, it offers views over the river and garden below.

The city is also known for the legend of Momotaro, the Peach Boy, a local hero whose story is told through statues, souvenirs, and museum displays around town.

Tips for Visitors:

Combine your visit to Korakuen and the castle in one scenic morning or afternoon

Try kibi dango, the traditional sweet from the Momotaro story

Okayama Station is well connected, a great base for day trips to Kurashiki or Naoshima

Visit in spring for cherry blossoms or autumn for fiery leaves in Korakuen

The city is compact, renting a bike is a fun way to explore
