Okayama Castle was originally built during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and completed by Ukita Hideie in 1597. The original keep burned down during World War II, and the current one was rebuilt in 1966.
Also known as the "Black Castle," Okayama Castle is famous for its jet-black exterior walls, a stark contrast to the white keep of Himeji Castle. The castle, set against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, exudes a calm and majestic presence. Walking down the castle grounds, one can still sense the lingering charm of the Momoyama period, and the view of Korakuen Garden across the river further enhances the elegance of the ancient capital.
From JR Okayama Station, it's a 25-minute walk, or take the 170 yen tram to "Johashita" Station, followed by a 10-minute walk.
