There is a very low-key shrine hidden near Japan's longest shopping street (Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street)⛩️. The shrine is not as big as Kyoto Tenmangu or Dazaifu Tenmangu, but it is well worth a stop to get a feel for Shintoism and is the site of one of Osaka's famous festivals.
It is one of the most popular shrines in Osaka and is dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. The main building is not only plain, but also exquisitely carved. The shrine is hung with prayer ema🐴, which is a small wooden sign on which visitors can write down their wishes and prayers. Therefore, at the beginning of the new school year, it will be crowded with students praying to pass the university and high school entrance examinations.
It is worth mentioning that according to legend, Sugawara no Mamoru loved plum blossoms, so in addition to planting plum blossoms all around the shrine, even the emblem of the shrine is a plum blossom pattern.
Best time to visit ⏰:
The Tenjin Festival is held in the summer from the end of June to mid-July every year. It is one of the few festivals in Japan with a history of a thousand years and is known as one of the three major festivals in Japan. The iconic events of the Tenjin Festival are the "Women Carrying the Mikoshi" and the "Fireworks Festival 🎆". In addition, during the plum blossom season, there will be plum festivals and plum wine tasting 🍶 conferences.
