Opened in 1909 (Meiji 42), this park has a long history.
Tennoji Park is a representative urban park of Osaka, home to Tennoji Zoo, a botanical greenhouse, the Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Arts, and Keitakuen Garden.
A bronze statue of Ikegami Shiro, the sixth mayor of Osaka, who contributed greatly to the city's development, stands within the park.
Chausuyama, towering southwest of Shitennoji Temple, was the headquarters of Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Winter Siege of Osaka and Sanada Yukimura on the Toyotomi side during the Summer Siege of Osaka. It is known as the site of the Battle of Chausuyama (Tennojiguchi). Historical documents, maps, and stone monuments depicting the Battle of Osaka are displayed at the mountain's summit.
At the foot of the mountain is Kawazokoike Pond, said to be the site of a pond excavated by Wake no Kiyomaro in 788 (Enryaku 7) to drain the Yamato River and Lake Kawachi and provide water transportation. The pond can be crossed via Wakebashi Bridge, which connects the park to Chahakusan Mountain.
