Strolling along the snowy trails of Mount Tengu

Tenguyama in Otaru was a pleasant surprise during our Hokkaido trip. We took the ropeway up in the late afternoon and were immediately rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Otaru city and the coastline. The ride itself was short but scenic, and the view from the top was absolutely worth it—especially as the sun began to set.
The summit had a very nostalgic feel, almost like stepping back into the Showa era. There was an old-school observatory area and even a tiny ski slope that seemed perfect for beginners or just some winter fun. I could imagine how lively it would be during peak ski season. Even though it wasn’t crowded when we visited, that actually made the whole experience feel more personal and relaxed.
We also checked out the tengu mask collection—it’s quirky but adds a cultural touch. I didn’t expect much going in, but I walked away really appreciating the charm of this little mountain. Great photo ops, fresh mountain air, and a quiet retreat from the usual tourist buzz.
