Pulau Pangkor - Underrated Destination

I recently had the chance to spend a few days on Pulau Pangkor, and it turned out to be a very refreshing getaway. Although many people think of Pangkor as a small island, I was actually surprised by its size. It is bigger than expected, with different corners and beaches to explore, so it never felt crowded or overly touristy. I visited on a weekday, which added to the charm—the pace was unhurried, the roads were quiet, and everything felt calm and easy-going.
One of the highlights of the trip was the abundance of hornbills. These beautiful birds are practically everywhere on the island, often flying in groups or perching on trees close to where you stay or dine. It gave the whole experience a unique natural touch—you don’t often get to be so close to wildlife in such a relaxed setting.
What I enjoyed most was how chill the atmosphere was. Pangkor is not a place for rushing around or squeezing in too many sights; it’s perfect if you want to slow down, unwind, and enjoy simple pleasures like a breezy walk by the beach, sipping a cold drink, or just taking in the sea views. Through a mutual friend, I even had the chance to connect with some locals. That personal touch made the trip feel warmer and more memorable, as I got to see a side of the island beyond what tourists usually experience.
And of course, no Pangkor trip is complete without seafood. The island is well known for it, and I was lucky to enjoy some really good dishes—fresh, flavorful, and very reasonably priced compared to city restaurants. It felt like the perfect ending to each day.

Overall, Pangkor may not be flashy, but that’s exactly why it’s a gem. It offers a laid-back escape, close-to-nature moments, and genuine hospitality that makes you want to come back again.
