The Treasury: Jordan’s Most Famous Facade

Nestled in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, lies a marvel of ancient architecture known as Al-Khazneh, or "The Treasury". Carved directly from a sandstone rock face, this elaborate temple shows the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Nabatean Kingdom.

The first glimpse of The Treasury upon exiting a narrow gorge leading into Petra, is breathtaking. Its intricate design, thought to depict various mythological figures associated with the afterlife, has withstood the test of time. Despite the erosion of some architectural details over the past two millennia, The Treasury remains undiminished.

Originally built as a mausoleum and crypt at the beginning of the 1st century AD during the reign of Aretas IV Philopatris, The Treasury is steeped in history. Local legends even suggest that it once housed pharaonic treasures, leading to its name.

Today, The Treasury stands as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Jordan and its fame has been further bolstered by its appearance in numerous films and media.
