Wat Chaiwatthanaram is one of the most prominent and beautiful ancient sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. It is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River on the island of the city. It was built in 2173 by King Prasat Thong to dedicate merit to his mother and was a royal temple used for important royal ceremonies during the Ayutthaya period.
The architecture of the temple is influenced by Angkor Wat in Cambodia, with a 35-meter-high main prang surrounded by 8 corner prangs and meru, connected by a covered gallery, which originally housed 120 Buddha statues in the Mara-Vijaya posture.
After the fall of Ayutthaya in 2310, the temple was abandoned and severely damaged until 2530 when the Fine Arts Department began restoration work and opened it to the public in 2535.
Today, Wat Chaiwatthanaram is part of the Ayutthaya Historical Park and is a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the beauty of ancient architecture and a peaceful evening atmosphere.
