Review of Wat Yai Chaimongkol Merit-Making – Full of Merit and Joy in the Old City of Ayutthaya

When it comes to important temples in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chaimongkol is definitely at the top of the list. Aside from being a significant historical site, it's also a popular destination for religious devotees seeking to pay their respects, make wishes, and admire the beauty of authentic Ayutthayan architecture.

As soon as you enter, the first thing you see is the large, striking Chedi Chaimongkol, seemingly telling the story of the reign of King Naresuan the Great, who commissioned it to celebrate his victory in battle. The temple grounds are clean and shady, with a cool breeze, making it a pleasant place to stroll around.

There are many places to make merit, including offerings to monks, gilding Buddha images, and paying respects to the principal Buddha image inside the viharn. The gentle chanting of monks creates a calm and relaxing atmosphere, offering a sense of disconnection from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

My favorite experience was climbing the chedi's base and taking in the 360-degree views of Ayutthaya, including the river, the surrounding chedi terraces, and the temple's roof against the sky. Every angle is stunning.

Things to know for those wishing to make merit here:
• It's recommended to come early in the morning when the weather is cooler and there aren't many people.
• Dress appropriately.
• Bring an umbrella or hat on sunny days, as the pagoda grounds are spacious and open.

In conclusion, Wat Yai Chaimongkol is not only a historical site, but also a place where you can both gain merit and rejoice in the beauty of the past. If you're visiting Ayutthaya, don't miss it!
