On this trip, we traveled to Phrae Province, a small town filled with the charm of local culture and handicrafts. Our destination was “Baan Mat Jai”, a source of learning about indigo-dyed fabric, which is considered local wisdom.

We had the opportunity to join a self-tie-dye workshop, learning everything from choosing fabrics, tying patterns, to the process of dyeing real indigo. Every step was done with meticulous traditional methods, resulting in unique patterns with a unique charm.

What I really liked was trying to design my own patterns. Some patterns were created by accident from folding, rolling, or tying in unexpected ways, but when unfolded, they were as beautiful as a piece of art. It was a fun experience that made me fall in love with “indigo fabric”.

Importantly, Ban Mat Jai is not just a place to learn, but also a place of smiles, kindness, and determination of the people in the community who want to pass on the culture to continue in a contemporary way.
