Located in Donggang, Pingtung, the southernmost part of Taiwan, where the harbor wind is mighty and salt water and incense are intertwined, there is a temple that is feared in the southern border - Donglong Temple, which worships Wen Fu Qiansui, the spiritual pillar and god of protection for believers in Donggang area.
The history of this temple can be traced back to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and it has been more than 200 years. The main god Wen Hongtu, also known as Wen Fu Qiansui, was a loyal minister in the late Ming Dynasty. He died for resisting the Qing Dynasty and was regarded as a loyal god by later generations. His statue is handsome and upright, wearing court clothes and holding a jade tablet, representing righteousness, loyalty and protection. Qiansuiye is majestic without anger. Believers who pray for peace, relief, luck, sea and sailing will come here to worship.
The King Welcoming Peace Festival held at Donglong Temple in the third month of the lunar calendar every year is one of the most important events of the King's faith in Taiwan. The ceremony lasts for eight days and seven nights, including traditional rituals such as inviting the king, circumambulating the land, rewarding the army, and sending off the king. It is the collective faith memory of the entire town of Donggang.
However, the most fascinating part of Donglong Temple is not just that. Climbing up the stairs, you will come to the second-floor temple of the temple. In the center is enshrined a rare and mysterious saint-the six-eyed Cangjie Immortal Master.
Cangjie is the saint who created Chinese characters in legend. The Cangjie enshrined in Donglong Temple is different from the general image. He has six eyes, three pairs of which look straight ahead, symbolizing insight into the sky, the earth, and people; it also symbolizes that the god of writing can see everything, write thousands of words, and remember all principles. This six-eyed immortal master sits high up to protect the cultural roots, bless the believers to open their wisdom and have a good fortune in books, and students and civil servants often come here to pray for inspiration and exam luck.
The six eyes are not angry, but deep as ink; one eye can see the destiny, one eye can understand people's hearts, and one eye can see the wind and clouds. He is not only the cultural master in the Donglong Temple's system of gods, but also a rare guardian god of books and literature in Taiwan.
The environment of the temple dedicated to Cangjie is quiet and solemn. There is an atmosphere of intellectuality and mystery in the curling incense, which complements the Wenfu Qiansui on the first floor to suppress evil spirits and protect people and homes, showing that the entire temple has both "loyalty and righteousness to protect the country" and "enlightenment and education".
