Located in Donggang Township, Pingtung County, Donglong Temple is one of Taiwan's most iconic temples dedicated to the gods and a central religious center in the Donggang area. The temple's principal deity, Wenfu Qiansui, is also enshrined alongside other deities such as Chifu, Zhufu, and Fanfu. The temple boasts a vibrant following, attracting devotees from across Taiwan. Founded during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Donglong Temple was originally built by local fishermen to pray for safe sea voyages. As Donggang was a major fishing port, the residents, many of whom relied on fishing for their livelihoods, held a particularly strong devotion to the sea gods and the gods. After numerous renovations, Donglong Temple's majestic architecture has become one of Donggang's most iconic landmarks. The temple's principal deity, Wenfu Qiansui, is reverently known as "Wangyegong" by the locals. Legend has it that Wangye was born during the Sui Dynasty and was named Wen Hong. He was intelligent and well-versed in poetry and literature, and passed the imperial examinations, earning him the title of Jinshi. The emperor later bestowed upon him the name Wen Hong and conferred him the title of Wangye. Donglong Temple boasts magnificent and exquisite architecture, with its main hall boasting vivid carved beams and painted rafters, showcasing traditional Minnan craftsmanship. The expansive temple grounds serve as a key venue for temple fairs and ceremonies to welcome the king. The most celebrated event is the "Welcoming the King and Peace Festival," also known as the "Donggang Welcome the King," held every three years. This is one of Taiwan's largest ceremonies for the king and is designated a National Important Folk Cultural Heritage. The welcoming ceremony includes traditional rituals such as "inviting the king," "procession," and "burning the king's boat." The grand spectacle not only solidifies local faith but also attracts visitors from both domestic and international audiences. Donglong Temple is not only a religious sanctuary but also a vital cultural center that unites the residents of Donggang. It embodies the fishermen's reverence for the sea, their devotion to the gods, and their hope for a peaceful life. To this day, Donggang Donglong Temple remains a vital symbol of Taiwanese folk beliefs and culture.
