Located in Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, the Kenting National Forest Recreation Area is a lush and captivating escape within Taiwan’s southernmost reaches. Set at about 200–300 meters above sea level and covering some 75–150 hectares, this forest area was originally established as the Hengchun Tropical Botanical Garden in 1906 and later transformed into a national forest recreation zone.
This recreation area stands out for its unusual geological and ecological features: an uplifted coral-reef forest forming part of a tropical rainforest landscape, remarkable limestone landforms including caves with stalactites, and a rich habitat of tropical plant species and migratory birds.
Whether you’re strolling the shaded forest trails, peering into hidden caves, or climbing the observation tower for views of the ocean and peninsula, the Kenting National Forest Recreation Area offers a refreshing break from beach life — a place where rainforest, geology, and nature combine in one unforgettable setting.
