The first of Pingyao's must-see attractions is the Ma Family Courtyard.
Built during the Tongzhi period of the Qing dynasty, this magnificent mansion boasts three main courtyards, six smaller courtyards, and 197 rooms. It features a courtyard within the grounds and a gate within the gate.

The Ma family possessed wealth and power that surpassed even the government of the time, to the point that the mansion itself functioned like a small village.

From a bird's-eye view, it resembles the shape of a large horse, a metaphor for the Ma family's business, "When the horse succeeds, it travels a thousand miles in a day." It has the honor of being known as the "First Grand Courtyard of Pingyao." It was the former residence of Ma, the Qing dynasty merchant and leader of Pingyao's four wealthy merchants.
