The Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) on Corcovado Hill, a symbol of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a gigantic statue about 30 meters tall that was erected in 1931 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of independence from Portugal.
Its outstretched arms are said to symbolize the warmth and peace of the Brazilian people.
This spot, which overlooks the entire city of Rio, is both a tourist attraction and a place of worship, and many people visit from all over the world every day.
