Take a bus from Yulin Bus Terminal in the morning (fare: CNY 20). The journey is about 50 km and takes about 1.5 hours to reach Rong County.
First stop: Maoming "Rongzhou Ancient City". The ancient city is 1.2 km from Rong County Bus Terminal. Book a car online (fare: CNY 5.5). Main attractions in "Rongzhou Ancient City":
1. Rongzhou "Government Office" is located on the beautiful "Xiu River". It was established during the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty (806–820) and was one of the five prefectures of the Tang Dynasty (Guangzhou, Chaozhou, Yongzhou, Guizhou, and Rongzhou). This shows the prosperity and importance of this border town in ancient times. I learned that this is the hometown of Yang Guifei, a famous concubine of the Tang Dynasty. There is a Yang Guifei Cultural Museum in the Rongzhou "Government Office". 2. The Zhenwu Pavilion of the Ancient Jinglue Platform is the core attraction of Rongzhou Ancient City. It is one of the four famous ancient buildings in southern China, along with Yellow Crane Tower in Hubei, Yueyang Tower in Hunan, and Tengwang Pavilion in Jiangxi. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the entire pavilion is a "lever-type pure wooden structure". The most exquisite part is the four suspended large inner columns on the second floor. It has survived five major earthquakes and four major typhoons, and has remained intact for over 400 years without any repairs. The foundation is made of compacted sand, which helps to absorb the shock of earthquakes. Standing in the pavilion, I felt as if I had traveled back in time, marveling at the wisdom of the ancient people. 3. Zhenwu Pavilion Stele, worth a visit.
4. "Zhenwu Pavilion" Cultural Exhibition Hall, mainly introducing the Great Emperor Zhenwu.
Second stop: Rong County Museum. The museum focuses on the history and culture of Rong County, and is divided into five sections: "Ancient State Relics, Glorious Past", "Famous Southern City, Long History", "Civil and Military Talents, Unparalleled Elegance", "Light of Overseas Chinese, Deep Affection for Hometown", and "Inheriting the Past and Ushering in the Future". It showcases the development of Rong County from the Stone Age to the present. The museum's treasure is the bronze bell of Kaiyuan Temple, weighing 3,476 jin.
Third stop: Kaiyuan Temple, built in the early Tang Dynasty, has a history of over 1,000 years. It is one of the oldest temples in Guangxi. It was destroyed by war in the Ming Dynasty. The Kaiyuan Temple we see today was rebuilt on the original site.
Fourth stop: Republic of China Town, a scenic area themed around the culture of the Republic of China. With a train track as the central axis, it recreates the Western-style buildings and life scenes of the Republic of China period, giving a sense of time travel. At night, the neon lights make it lively and bustling.
