Shuihui Garden is a classical garden with a rich historical and cultural heritage located in the northeast corner of Rucheng Town, Rugao City, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. Shuihui Garden is centered around water, with a developed water system and surrounded by rivers, like a vivid ink painting. The name Shuihui Garden means "where waters meet, a garden is painted."
Shuihui Garden was built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620) and was originally the property of a local named Mao Yiguan. It was perfected over four generations until the time of Mao Pijiang (one of the four gentlemen of the late Ming Dynasty), making Shuihui Garden a famous private garden. The architectural style of the garden is simple and elegant, with more than ten scenic spots, including Hanbi Hall, Yimo Studio, Yingshu Building, Xiangzhong Pavilion, Xuanliu Mountain House, Jing Pavilion, Selang Slope, Xiaosangwu Pavilion, Zhenyan Pavilion, and Miaoyin Xianglin. These buildings are cleverly arranged, with a harmonious layout that complements the garden scenery, blending Huizhou architectural techniques with Yangzhou architectural art.
The famous garden master, Professor Chen Congzhou of Tongji University, once wrote in "The Record of the Renovation of Shuihui Garden": "Rugao Shuihui Garden is a famous garden in the world," which highlights the status of Shuihui Garden in Chinese gardens.
In June 2001, Shuihui Garden was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit in the fifth batch. In July 2010, Shuihui Garden was rated as a national 4A-level scenic spot.
