Into the Wild: My Solo Trek in Retezat National Park

#mytraveldiary

I just hiked through Retezat National Park — a realm of glacial lakes, rugged peaks, and untouched forests that felt like something out of a fairy tale. With over 80 crystal-clear lakes and some of Romania’s highest mountains, Retezat is a paradise for solo adventurers seeking raw nature and solitude.

What Makes Retezat Special?

· Glacial Lakes: Including the famous Bucura Lake (the largest in Romania) and Zănoaga Lake.
· Peaks & Ridges: Such as Peleaga (2,509 m) and Păpușa — offering challenging climbs and epic views.
· Biodiversity: Home to brown bears, chamois, lynx, and rare alpine flowers.
· UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: Recognized for its pristine ecosystems and conservation efforts.

Why Retezat for Solo Travelers?

· Well-Marked Trails: Clear signage and refuges (cabins) for overnight stays.
· Safe for Prepared Hikers: Popular among solo trekkers — but weather can change fast.
· Digital Detox: Limited phone signal encourages true connection with nature.
· Rewarding Challenge: Perfect for building confidence and experiencing raw beauty alone.

My Solo Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Acclimatization

· Took a train or bus to Hunedoara or Hațeg, then a local bus to Râu de Mori or Cârnic.
· Hiked to Gentiana Hut or Bucura Lake Hut (3–5 hours, depending on the route).
· Set up camp or booked a bed in a mountain hut — chatted with other hikers.

Day 2: High Altitude Lakes & Peaks

· Hiked to Bucura Lake — swam in icy water (for the brave!) and photographed the surrounding peaks.
· Climbed Peleaga Peak or Păpușa Peak for 360-degree views of the Retezat range.
· Picnicked by Zănoaga Lake or Tăul Portii.

Day 3: Descent & Return

· Took a different route back — perhaps via Stânele Resort or Nucșoara Valley.
· Stopped in a local village for a traditional meal — sarmale (cabbage rolls) or mămăligă (polenta).
· Returned to Hunedoara or continued to other Transylvanian gems like Sarmizegetusa Regia.

Solo Hiker Tips

1. Check Weather & Trail Conditions: Sudden storms are common — pack rain gear and layers.
2. Carry a Map & Compass: Phone service is unreliable — don’t rely on digital maps alone.
3. Bear Safety: Store food properly, make noise on trails, and carry bear spray if possible.
4. Hut Booking: In peak season (July–August), book huts in advance — or bring a tent.

Final Thoughts

Retezat stole my heart — waking up to misty lakes, climbing ridges where eagles soar, and feeling the silence of the mountains was a powerful reminder of why I travel solo. For those who crave challenge, beauty, and the kind of solitude only wild places offer, Retezat is a dream destination.
