Chasing the Sound of Music in Salzburg

Spent day trip day in Salzburg during CNY 2025 period and honestly, it was like stepping into a postcard. The old town is compact, super walkable, and everywhere you look feels like a movie set – because it actually was.

First stop: Mozart’s Birthplace. It’s right in the heart of Getreidegasse, one of the prettiest streets I’ve ever walked down. The museum was well laid out with personal items, original instruments, and letters. It’s not too big, but very informative. It was surreal to stand where one of the greatest composers was born.

Later in the day, I visited Mirabell Palace and Gardens – instantly recognizable from The Sound of Music. The gardens were in full bloom and it’s easy to see why they chose it for the “Do-Re-Mi” scene. I didn’t do the full Sound of Music tour but still managed to find a few iconic filming spots on my own. The Pegasus fountain and those vine-covered tunnels are exactly as you remember them.

I didn’t have time for everything, but the combination of classical music history and Hollywood nostalgia made this day unforgettable. If you’re even mildly interested in Mozart or The Sound of Music, Salzburg is 100% worth a visit.
