Just outside San Pedro de Atacama lies Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), a surreal desert landscape that looks like it belongs on another planet. With its dramatic rock formations, salt-covered plains, and fiery sunsets, it’s one of Chile’s most unforgettable natural wonders.
Highlights from my visit:
• Martian Landscapes – rugged canyons, sand dunes, and salt ridges shaped by centuries of wind and water erosion.
• Amphitheater Rock Formations – giant natural sculptures that glow under the afternoon sun.
• Salt Caverns – shimmering white crystals and narrow passages carved into the desert floor.
• Sunset Viewpoints – the entire valley painted in shades of orange, red, and purple as the sun dips behind the Andes.
• Stargazing – with some of the clearest skies on Earth, the night view here is simply breathtaking.
🌟 Best time to visit: Late afternoon for the sunset, then stay after dark for unforgettable stargazing.
