Hill of the Buddha: A Spiritual Landmark in Sapporo

🌸Makomanai Takino Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Hokkaido. The giant Buddha statue has been guarding here for more than 25 years. Because the giant Buddha is out of tune with the surrounding mountain scenery, it was designed by the architectural master Tadao Ando, who cleverly used the terrain to hide the giant Buddha in the terrain. When looking at the top of the mountain, you can only see the head of the Buddha statue. After passing through the tunnel, you can appreciate the majestic whole body of the Buddha statue. Looking up from the bottom, you can see the blue sky behind the Buddha statue, "creating a scenery that allows the giant Buddha to blend with the surrounding landscape."
🌸In the summer, it will be surrounded by 150,000 lavender plants, and in the winter, it will be covered by a layer of snow. However, when we visited, there was no lavender or snow, only bursts of heavy rain. In addition to the Great Buddha and the Great Buddha Hall, the entire park is designed as an open trail. There are also two rows of Moai statues, which seems a bit abrupt. In Japan, the "Mo" in Moai statues means future, and "Ai" means survival. Further into the park there is a monument very similar to Stonehenge in the UK, which is used as a tombstone for permanent offerings.
