✨Many people may know Wat Sri Don Moon in Chiang Mai for its magnificent Luang Por Phet Buddha statue, a large Buddha image in the viharn. But there's more to this temple than just that. The exterior of the viharn features a reenactment of the important event when the Lord Buddha descended from the heavenly realm of Sangkassa, where he spent the Rains Retreat in the Davadungsa Heaven to preach to his mother. After the end of the Rains Retreat, he returned to the human world. Upon seeing the offerings made by the gods and humans, he opened the world, allowing all gods and humans to see heaven, the human world, and hell. The gods saw humans, humans saw gods, and hell beings saw humans and gods. They all saw each other in all three realms, hence the name "The Day the Lord Opens the World." The Lord Buddha emitted six-colored rays as he descended from Davadungsa Heaven. Indra created three staircases: a golden staircase, a glass staircase, and a silver staircase, with the top of the stairs resting on the summit of Mount Sumeru. The staircase is located at the gate of Sangkassanakorn. When the Lord Buddha descended, he used the crystal staircase, which is located between the silver and silver staircases. The deities descended on the golden staircase, while the great Brahmas descended on the silver staircase. This procession is called the Thevo Rohana, which is the origin of the Thevo Rohana alms-giving ceremony, which continues to this day. This event is beautifully and atmospherically recreated here.
