I knew I had made the right call the moment I saw the long queue snaking outside Gyutan Kaku â Vlandome. When youâre in Sendai, trying their famous gyutan (beef tongue) is practically a must, and after combing through Google Maps for the highest-rated spots, this one stood outâand for good reason.
Even though reservations are accepted, we decided to try our luck with a walk-in. No luckâqueues were unavoidable, and we ended up waiting around 30â40 minutes. But hereâs the thing: even as we waited, more people kept arriving and joining the queue. Thatâs always a good sign.
Once seated, we went for the classic grilled beef tongue set, while the kids opted for the beef tongue curry. The gyutan was perfectly cookedâtender yet with that signature chewiness, beautifully charred, with a subtle smoky flavor and rich seasoning. It didnât taste gamey at all; in fact, it could easily pass off as a premium beef cut. Every bite had that âwowâ factor.
Portions were satisfying, and the pricing was very reasonable for the quality. If youâre planning to go, make a reservation ahead of time to avoid the waitâbut even if you donât, this place is well worth it.
