Located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, a renowned warlord and the founder of the Sendai Domain. Originally built in 1637 by Masamune's son, Date Tadamune, it is famous for its lavish Momoyama-style architecture, featuring colorful wood carvings and gold lacquer decorations that exude authority and grandeur. Although it was destroyed during the war, it has since been reconstructed and still retains its solemn and magnificent atmosphere.
Within the grounds, in addition to Masamune's Zuihoden, there are the Kansenden for the second-generation lord Tadamune and the Zennoden for the third-generation lord Tsunamune. There is also a museum displaying excavated artifacts and historical materials. Walking along the approach surrounded by cedar trees adds to the tranquil and dignified ambiance.
🚍 From Sendai Station, you can take a bus for about 15 minutes, get off at "Zuihoden Entrance," and walk for approximately 5 minutes to reach the site. This is not only a must-visit spot for history enthusiasts but also the best place to experience the culture of the Sendai Domain and the grandeur of the Date family.
