Zuihoden and the ruins of Sendai Castle: Sendai's famous sites tracing the history of Date Masamune

No visit to Sendai is complete without a visit to Zuihoden, a temple associated with the Sengoku period warlord Date Masamune, and the ruins of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle). Both are easily accessible from the city center, allowing visitors to enjoy Sendai's history and scenery all at once.

Zuihoden - Date Masamune's Magnificent Mausoleum

Zuihoden is the mausoleum dedicated to Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai domain.
The vibrant vermilion, blue, and gold decorations evoke Masamune's aesthetic sense. The lavish architecture, inspired by Momoyama culture, is like a work of art.

The temple grounds also include Kansenden, dedicated to the second lord, Tadamune, and Zennoden, dedicated to the third lord, Tsunamune, allowing visitors to quietly trace the history of the Date clan. Enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves adding a touch of color.

Sendai Castle Ruins - A Castle Remains on a Hill Remaining the Image of Masamune

Sendai Castle Ruins (Aoba Castle Ruins), located about a 10-minute drive from Zuihoden, is the site of Sendai Castle, built by Date Masamune in 1601. Remains of the stone walls and castle gate remain, allowing visitors to experience the castle's past.

From the hilltop, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sendai city, especially at sunset. The square with a statue of Masamune on horseback is a popular photo spot representing Sendai.
The castle ruins also include the Aoba Castle Museum, which introduces the history of the Date clan through historical documents and videos. History buffs should not miss it.

Suggested Itinerary

Sendai Station → Zuihoden → Sendai Castle Ruins → Take a break at a cafe on Jozenji-dori

The city's circular bus, the "Loople Sendai," allows you to efficiently travel around major tourist attractions.
Both Zuihoden and the Sendai Castle ruins are places where the footsteps of Date Masamune and the nature of Sendai are in harmony.
This is a recommended course for those who want to enjoy both history and scenery.
