Ikseon-dong, located near Jongno 3-ga, has become one of the favorite destinations for young tourists from all over the world in recent years. For more than two hundred years, this area has been the prime location within the four gates of Changdeokgung Palace.
In fact, during the Japanese occupation, this was also a prosperous commercial area. After the land system was changed, part of Handong was merged into Ikseondong in 1914. The name of Ikseon-dong is derived from the character "Ik" from Ik-dong in the Joseon Dynasty and the character "Seon" from Jeongseonbong.
The century-old Hanok buildings today were built by real estate developer Jeong Se-kwon, who purchased a piece of land, divided it into units of 20 pyeong, and built a group of Hanok buildings to solve the housing problem. The Hanok Village referred to today refers to the 118 old buildings here.
In fact, Insadong and Samcheongdong were developed earlier. In the early years, these areas were sparsely populated. In 2014, the urban redevelopment failed. With the popularity of stores such as Paradise Station, Seoul Coffee, Xiaoxia Salt Field, and Cheongsudang on Instagram, these areas have attracted a large number of stores to renovate their Hanok houses and move in in recent years. The Hanok exterior and interior design are kept unique, which gradually increases the popularity of this area.
When you come to Seoul, don't miss visiting Ikseon-dong and finding your favorite Korean house style.
