The Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 branch near Dongdaemun in Seoul had a distinctly different atmosphere from typical stores. True to its name, Gyeongdong 1960 was built by renovating part of the former Gyeongdong Market building, and from the moment I stepped inside, I felt a fusion of past and present.
The exterior, reflecting the old brick building's appearance, exuded a vintage charm. Inside, the high ceilings and exposed structures created an open, airy atmosphere. The original pillars and window frames remained, blending seamlessly with the sophisticated interior, creating a truly retro sensibility.
The spacious, high ceilings ensured a comfortable atmosphere. Artwork along one wall and lighting filled the space, creating a warm atmosphere. The ample spacing between tables made it ideal for working on a laptop or simply reading a book.
Above all, the unique charm of this place lies in its "storytelling." It's not just a place to enjoy coffee; it's a place where vestiges of a 1960s market coexist with a modern sensibility. Sitting by the cafe window, sipping a warm latte and gazing at the texture of the old building, I realized I was experiencing more than just a cup of coffee.
Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 wasn't just a cafe; it was an "experiential store" that was a must-visit for those who appreciate the sensibilities of Huam-dong and Ikseon-dong. If Yanagibashi Market in Fukuoka is the "Kitchen of Hakata," then this place felt like a small "time travel cafe" in Seoul.
