Seoul|The Architectural Beauty of Century-Old Seoul Station: Renaissance Style Meets Modernity

Completed in 1925, Seoul Station celebrates its centennial this year. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Yasushi Tsukamoto during the Japanese colonial era, the structure incorporates the Renaissance Revival style of the time, featuring a soaring dome, intricate carvings, and magnificent stained glass.

In 2004, the original station became inadequate, and private investment led to the construction of a new Seoul Station. Following restoration, the old station was transformed into the Seoul 284 Cultural Station in 2011, continuing to showcase the joys and sorrows borne by this historic building. This location is also a popular filming location for Korean dramas, including "Diva on a Deserted Island" and "Reply 1994," which recreate scenes from the old station.

My favorite spot is the restored exhibition hall on the second floor. Century-old chandeliers, dome fragments, and gable structures are displayed within the calm red brick building, creating a sense of tangible history and a glimpse into the bustling capital of the past. The semicircular window and dome above the main entrance, overlooking the lobby, are indescribably beautiful. After Korea's independence, it nurtured its history. Even amid Seoul's aggressive modernization, this century-old gateway continues to stand tall in the heart of the city.
