Magnolia flowers are blooming in Shanghai! Here's a viewing map→.

China has a history of cultivating magnolias for over 2,500 years. In the late 18th century, magnolias were introduced from China to European countries such as England and France, where they became quite popular. Between 1820 and 1840, horticulturist Berthier hybridized white magnolias with purple magnolias, creating 17 cultivated varieties with different flower colors, marking the first batch of artificial hybrids in the Magnoliaceae family, which were later introduced back to China. Botanists have since developed many more new varieties, widely cultivated across various regions.
Besides white magnolias, Shanghai also grows other cultivated species of the Magnoliaceae family, such as Magnolia denudata, Magnolia liliiflora, Magnolia × soulangeana, Magnolia sprengeri, purple magnolia, and star magnolia.
The white magnolia flowers are pure white like jade, each blossom facing upward. From afar, they look like butterflies ready to take flight, resting on the branches. When the breeze passes by, it carries a faint and refreshing floral fragrance.
