While traveling in Shanghai, I recently visited Panlong Tiandi (蟠龙天地), and it’s not for nothing that they say this place is really hot in Shanghai these days. At first, I didn’t have high expectations, thinking it would just be a new city with a bit of traditional architecture, but I was really surprised by the atmosphere and the landscaping.
First of all, the location is on the western end of Shanghai, right next to Panlonglu Station on Subway Line 17, so it’s quite accessible. It takes about 40-50 minutes from the city center, but the scenery is so beautiful that it’s worth the travel time. I arrived during the day and stayed until sunset, and when the lights start to turn on one by one at sunset, the atmosphere completely changes. That time is the real charm point.
This is a space that revives the old water town feeling in a modern way, and there is a walking path along the waterway, and the stone bridges are cutely connected, so it’s fun to walk. There are many shops, cafes, and restaurants that retain the traditional feel here and there. It's not just a modern hot place full of Instagram vibes, but it has a subtle traditional beauty and modern sensibility, so you end up taking a lot of pictures as you walk.
It was quite special to be able to feel this kind of quietness in the city.
If you only spend time in downtown Shanghai, it's a bit hectic and complicated, but if you come here and take a breather, walk slowly, take pictures, it feels like a comma in your trip.
Personally, I'd like to recommend it more to people who have been there once or twice and want a new atmosphere rather than a busy area, rather than people who are visiting Shanghai for the first time. I think people who like traditional beauty and people who like taking pictures will especially like it.
