🏮 Lanterns, Lights & Lunar Magic at Yu Garden

Throwback to Chinese New Year during the Year of the Tiger, and I’m still thinking about the lantern displays at YuYuan in Shanghai – absolutely spectacular. The whole place was lit up with glowing tigers, dragons, and traditional scenes, all nestled within the stunning Ming-era architecture of the garden.

Every year they do it differently, and every year it’s worth going back – the atmosphere is just electric. Locals and tourists come in droves, shoulder to shoulder, soaking up the lights, music and street food. It’s busy, yes – but that festive buzz is all part of the charm.

Don’t miss the food – from dumplings and crispy snacks to the heavenly Ningbo TangYuan (glutinous rice balls with sesame filling… ridiculously good). And the old Huxinting Teahouse, perched right in the middle of the zigzag bridge – a proper moment of calm in the middle of the crowds.

If you’re ever in Shanghai during Lunar New Year, make this your first stop. Highly recommended.
