Farewell to the crowds of Shanghai sightseeing, a golden scenic route: from Waibaidu Bridge to the Oriental Pearl Tower

Shanghai Waibaidu Bridge to Oriental Pearl Tower Golden Sightseeing Route Guide:

When visiting Shanghai, the cross-river journey from Waibaidu Bridge to the Oriental Pearl Tower is not to be missed. This route blends Shanghai’s century-old history with modern prosperity.

Start your day early at Waibaidu Bridge. This century-old steel bridge spans the confluence of the Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River. It is a landmark of Shanghai and China’s first fully steel-structured riveted bridge. Standing on the bridge, one side shows the old-style alleys along Suzhou Creek, full of local life; the other side features modern buildings, showcasing the city’s vigorous development. The steel frame of the bridge paired with warm yellow lighting creates an artistic and vintage atmosphere, perfect for photos that can also capture the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Lujiazui “trio” in one shot. Nearby are the Shanghai Tower and the Pujiang Hotel, both rich in historical significance.

Stroll south along the Bund sightseeing platform to admire the international architectural exhibition on the Bund. Fifty-two buildings of various styles line up, including Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles. Walking among them feels like stepping back into old Shanghai, experiencing the charm of history. When tired, there are many restaurants and cafes along the way for rest.

Next, take a 2-yuan ferry from Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal or Gongping Road Ferry Terminal to Pudong. On the ferry, enjoy the river breeze and take in the views of both sides of the Huangpu River, feeling the collision and fusion of Shanghai’s history and modernity.

Upon arriving in Pudong, you will be at the foot of the Oriental Pearl Tower. This 468-meter-high TV tower is composed of 11 spheres of different sizes, resembling “big and small pearls falling on a jade plate,” and is a new symbol of Shanghai. Ascend to the main observation deck at 263 meters for a 360-degree panoramic view of Shanghai’s bustling cityscape; or challenge yourself on the fully transparent skywalk at 259 meters for a thrilling cloud-walking experience; you can also enjoy the 78-meter “Geng Shang·Hai” immersive multimedia show, imagining the future of Shanghai. The Shanghai Urban History Exhibition Hall inside the tower is also worth a visit to deeply understand Shanghai’s historical changes.

As night falls, the Oriental Pearl Tower lights up brilliantly, complementing the international architecture of the Bund. Return to the Bund at this time to enjoy the magnificent night view, concluding this wonderful Shanghai journey.
