Mercure Shanghai City Centre: A Luxurious Experience Made Famous by a Song

“Night Shanghai, Night Shanghai, you are a city that never sleeps…” Every time I hear this song, I am filled with longing for Shanghai, this city that never sleeps. This time, I finally came to Shanghai and stayed at the Mercure Hotel located in the city center at People’s Square, and the experience was fantastic.

- Decoration Style: The hotel features a blend of modern minimalist and new Chinese style decor. In the lobby, marble floors paired with wooden accents and soft lighting create a warm atmosphere. Chinese ink paintings hang on the walls, and blue-and-white porcelain-toned ornaments highlight a rich cultural heritage throughout.
- Room Type/Layout: I stayed in a deluxe king room, which was spacious and well laid out. The floor-to-ceiling windows provided excellent natural light and a panoramic view of the bustling city. The bed was very comfortable with high-end bedding. There was a separate work area with an ergonomic chair and a large desk, very friendly for business travelers. The bathroom had a dry and wet separation, high-end sanitary facilities, and an independent shower, making it very convenient to use.
- Activities: The hotel’s location is excellent, surrounded by many attractions and shopping centers. You can walk to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, making shopping and sightseeing very convenient. The hotel offers travel consultation services and can arrange tours to attractions like the Bund and City God Temple. The hotel’s gym and swimming pool are well-equipped and elegantly designed, perfect for relaxing. You can also rent bicycles to explore the city.
- Dining Features: The Chinese and Western buffet breakfast is very abundant, with fresh fruit, bread, eggs, porridge, and Shanghai specialty snacks. Don’t miss the xiaolongbao and shengjianbao. During lunch and dinner, you can enjoy authentic local cuisine and international dishes. Braised pork and crab roe tofu are must-tries. The staff are friendly and efficient, and there is 24-hour room service.
- Average Cost: A deluxe king room costs about 1,200 RMB per night, including breakfast and gym access. The restaurant’s average spending per person is 150 - 250 RMB, offering good value for money.
- Other Tips: It is recommended to book in advance as the hotel is in the city center and tends to be fully booked during peak seasons. The hotel is close to the subway station, making travel convenient. There are many nearby attractions, so plan your itinerary ahead. The hotel staff are friendly and enthusiastic, providing travel advice and luggage storage services. There is also free parking, making it convenient for self-driving tourists.
