The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai: A Retro Old-Money Stay

The Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai offers a retro old-money style accommodation experience. I've stayed here several times, and while online reviews about the hotel are mixed—some even considering it the lowest-ranked Ritz-Carlton in China—I personally feel that despite the aging hardware, the service still lives up to the standards of top luxury.

First of all, the hotel's location is truly excellent. Although it's a bit of a walk from the Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road metro stations, the hotel is situated in the Shanghai Centre, a building that is itself a part of China's architectural history. Right next door is the luxury brand-filled Plaza 66, and the entire area exudes a strong "old money" vibe.

Of course, being a nearly 40-year-old hotel, there are many aspects of the hardware that no longer meet luxury standards. For instance, the room's ceiling height feels quite low, and the 10-meter swimming pool is almost comically small. However, the service at the Portman remains top-notch. The front desk and concierge are highly professional, and any requests are promptly addressed.

The rooms have been renovated, and the bedding is very comfortable, though the bathroom design still feels outdated. Amenities include large bottles of Diptyque products. A highlight of the guest rooms is the view from the windows, offering a stunning overlook of the bustling West Nanjing Road.

The breakfast area is not very large, and seating is limited, but the food quality is excellent, with no pre-made dishes. The freshly steamed Chinese dim sum is particularly impressive!

Overall, the Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai does carry the marks of its era, but this also gives it a certain "retro" charm. If you're looking for cutting-edge hardware, this hotel might not be the best choice. However, if you want to experience Shanghai's "old money" atmosphere, it's still a worthwhile option in the old Jing'an district.
