|Wenchang Pavilion in Shuozhou Ancient City.
Shuozhou Wenchang Pavilion is located at the intersection of the east, south, west and north streets of the old city. In the old days, locals used to call it Geerdun! It was built on the basis of the original drum tower in the 13th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1585) and in the 12th year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty.
It was rebuilt in 1655. According to the Shuozhou Chronicle, Wenchang Pavilion is more than 100 feet high, with double eaves and flying corners. It has four gates with a circumference of more than 20 steps. The north plaque reads "Zhenshuo", the east plaque reads "Chaoyang", the south plaque reads "Yingxun" and the west plaque reads "Laishuang".
Wenchang Pavilion is a traditional sacrificial building, built to worship the god who is in charge of literary fortune and fame in legend, and to ensure the prosperity of literary culture in the area. Wenchang Pavilion in Shuozhou also serves as a drum tower from its history and location! It is a two-story pavilion-style building with green glazed tiles, built on a square brick arch platform (total height 30 meters, platform height 10 meters), with well-proportioned and exquisite structure. Each floor of the pavilion has doors on four sides, with open corridors on the outside, and a cross-shaped double-eaved hip roof with dragon glazed gargoyles at the four ends! It fully demonstrates the exquisite beauty of architectural art!
