🇰🇭Siem Reap
In Siem Reap, Cambodia, I finally got to witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat.
The breathtakingly mystical scenery overwhelmed me, and it was the moment I truly felt, "I’ve made it here."
The surrounding area is filled with temples of similar design, but the vastness of the site made it quite challenging to explore them all!
The tropical heat almost got the better of me, but I powered through with sheer determination🔥 (haha).
The overwhelming scale of the Angkor Archaeological Park 🏯🌅
✅ The mystical sunrise at Angkor Wat 🌄
I arrived before dawn and witnessed the temple emerge with the sunrise. The reflection of Angkor Wat in the pond was stunning, a true spectacle! I could feel the grandeur of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
✅ Vast archaeological site… challenging to navigate 🛺
Not only Angkor Wat, but countless temples are scattered around the area. Walking was impractical due to the distances, so tuk-tuk transportation was essential. Exploring the ruins was physically demanding, but every site was worth the effort!
✅ Cambodia’s harsh climate ☀️
High humidity and intense sunlight made hydration and breaks a necessity! There were moments I felt on the edge, but I managed to push through. Experiencing the ruins in this heat added to the adventure.
Major ruins visited 🏛️
📍 Angkor Wat 🏯
The masterpiece of Khmer architecture! Built in the 12th century, this massive Hindu temple is even depicted on Cambodia’s national flag. The central tower stands about 65 meters tall, and the intricate carvings were awe-inspiring.
📍 Bayon 🗿
A mysterious temple featuring giant "four-faced Buddha" sculptures. The 54 towers adorned with smiling Buddha faces left a lasting impression with their unique atmosphere.
📍 Ta Prohm 🌳
A jungle-covered ruin that served as a filming location for "Tomb Raider." The massive banyan trees intertwining with the ruins were incredibly striking!
📍 Banteay Srei 🎨
Known for its exquisite reliefs, often referred to as the "Mona Lisa of the East." Unlike Angkor Wat, it features pink sandstone, giving it an elegant vibe.
📍 Preah Khan 🛕
A site with a palace-like ambiance and intricate carvings. It was a quieter spot with fewer tourists, allowing for peaceful exploration.
Cambodian cuisine enjoyed in Siem Reap 🍽️
🍛 Amok
A signature Cambodian coconut curry dish! Made with fish or chicken, steamed with a curry-flavored sauce. The sweet spices and coconut aroma were perfectly balanced.
🍜 Kuy Teav
A rice noodle soup similar to Vietnamese pho. The light chicken or pork broth was soothing in the hot climate.
🍢 Lok Lak
Stir-fried beef in a sweet and savory sauce. Topped with a fried egg and served with lime-pepper dipping sauce—absolutely delicious!
🍹 Angkor Beer 🍺
Cambodia’s classic beer, best enjoyed ice-cold. The perfect refreshment after a day of exploring ruins!
