- This barrage was first conceptualized in 1987 by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to help the country become more self-sufficient in its water needs. Construction began on March 22, 2005, and it was officially opened on October 31, 2008, as Singapore's 15th reservoir.
- The Marina Reservoir, a water storage, flood control, and recreational facility, received the 2009 American Institute of Environmental Engineers Outstanding Achievement Award. It also transformed Marina Bay, previously saltwater, into freshwater for the first time in history.
