Merlion, the symbol of Singapore

Getting to Know the Merlion, Singapore's Symbol

When we have the opportunity to travel to Singapore, the first thing that comes to mind is the familiar symbol of the country: the "Merlion," or the Merlion of Singapore Island. Today, let's learn more about the Merlion and how it came to be the symbol of Singapore. Originally, the Merlion, a creature with the head of a lion but the body of a fish, with its tail standing atop waves, was used as the emblem of the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (STPB).

The Merlion is located in Merlion Park, at the mouth of the Singapore River, opposite Elizabeth Walk. It has since become a popular tourist attraction, and on September 15, 1972, then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew presided over the installation ceremony of the Merlion statue and a commemorative plaque with the inscription, "The Merlion was erected to symbolize the welcome of all visitors to Singapore."
