Iceland’s landscapes feel otherworldly, but Fjaðrárgljúfur (pronounced Fya-throwr-glyoo-fur) is something else entirely—a majestic, moss-coated canyon carved by ice and water over thousands of years. Made famous by Justin Bieber’s “I’ll Show You” music video, this natural wonder is a solo hiker’s dream: raw, serene, and humbling.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Morning – Canyon Walk & Epic Views: Arrived early (before tour buses) and hiked the well-marked trail along the canyon’s edge. The path offers staggering views of the Fjaðrá River snaking through jagged cliffs draped in electric-green moss. Took my time climbing to the main overlooks—each more breathtaking than the last.
· Afternoon – River Sounds & Picnic Silence: Found a quiet spot near the river below to enjoy a solo picnic. Listened to the wind and water echo through the canyon—no crowds, just pure Icelandic nature.
· Evening – Golden Hour Magic: Stayed until late afternoon for soft golden light perfect for photography. Drove onwards to nearby Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur for a warm meal and cozy accommodation.
Why Fjaðrárgljúfur is Perfect for Solo Travelers:
· Safe & Well-Maintained: The trail is clearly marked with viewing platforms and ropes for safety.
· Soul-Stirring Solitude: Even with its fame, the scale of the canyon makes it easy to find moments alone.
· Free Access: No entrance fee—just pure, free nature.
· Easy Detour: Located just off Iceland’s Ring Road, making it an ideal stop between Vik and Höfn.
Tips for Your Visit:
· 🥾 Wear waterproof hiking boots—paths can be muddy and slippery.
· 🌧️ Check road and trail conditions—sometimes the canyon closes to protect the fragile environment.
· 📸 Drones are prohibited—respect the rules and preserve the peace.
Fjaðrárgljúfur isn’t just a canyon—it’s a cathedral of nature. And experiencing it alone makes you feel both tiny and tremendously alive.
