Exploring Ko Yo: A Peaceful Island Escape from Hat Yai

During my stay in Hat Yai, I decided to take a short day trip to a lesser-known but charming destination just outside the city — Ko Yo (Koh Yo), a small island in Songkhla Lake, located in the Mueang Songkhla District of Songkhla Province.

🚗 Getting There

From Hat Yai, the journey to Ko Yo took about 40 minutes by car. The drive itself was scenic — passing through local villages, lush greenery, and eventually crossing the Tinsulanonda Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Thailand, which connects the mainland to Ko Yo. The moment I saw the calm waters of Songkhla Lake and the fishing boats bobbing in the distance, I knew this trip would be something special.

🏝️ First Impressions of Ko Yo

Ko Yo is a peaceful island, surrounded by the tranquil waters of the lake. It’s known for its local handicrafts, delicious seafood, and authentic southern Thai culture. Unlike the busy streets of Hat Yai, Ko Yo feels calm, authentic, and unspoiled.

The island isn’t very large, so you can explore most of it in just a few hours. Renting a motorbike or hiring a local driver is a great way to get around.

🐟 Highlights of the Trip 1. Local Seafood Lunch

Ko Yo is famous for its fresh lake seafood, especially grilled fish, shrimp, and soft-shell crab. I stopped at a small local restaurant overlooking the lake and had one of the best meals of my trip — simple, fresh, and full of flavor.

2. Ko Yo Woven Fabric (ผ้าทอเกาะยอ)

The island is renowned for its handwoven fabric called "Pha Khao Ma Ko Yo". I visited a small weaving workshop and watched local women creating intricate patterns using traditional looms. You can buy beautiful scarves and clothing as unique souvenirs.

3. Wat Tha Kae Temple

A peaceful temple with views of the lake, Wat Tha Kae isn’t crowded but offers a quiet place to reflect and take in the local spirituality. The golden Buddha statue set against the backdrop of the lake was stunning.

4. Tinsulanonda Bridge Viewpoints

Before leaving, I stopped at the viewpoints along the Tinsulanonda Bridge for some photos. The view of the lake, mountains, and traditional fishing villages is postcard-perfect.

💡 Travel Tips Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Bring cash, as many local shops and eateries don’t accept cards. Respect the local culture — Ko Yo is a quiet, conservative community. A day trip is enough, but if you want to stay overnight, there are a few homestays and lake-view resorts on the island. 🌅 Final Thoughts

Ko Yo was a refreshing break from the bustle of Hat Yai. With its laid-back atmosphere, friendly locals, and scenic beauty, it’s the perfect place to experience authentic southern Thai culture. If you're visiting Songkhla or Hat Yai, don’t miss this hidden gem — just a short ride away, but a world apart.
