When thinking of Cambodia, Angkor Wat often comes to mind as a famous tourist destination. However, Tonle Sap Lake, located in the same Siem Reap area, is another must-visit spot.
This vast lake is home to many people who still live on the water. By taking a boat ride, you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Tonle Sap Lake and observe the daily lives of those who reside on the water. In addition to large tourist boats, you'll also see smaller boats used by locals for shopping and other daily activities, offering a glimpse into their unique way of life.
The water levels of the lake vary significantly between the rainy and dry seasons, with up to three times more water during the rainy season. Having visited during both seasons, I noticed that in the dry season, you can see houses that appear to be floating above the ground due to the low water levels. In contrast, during the rainy season, the villages truly float on the water, creating a lively and picturesque scene. The rainy season is also ideal for fishing, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. (All the photos here were taken during the rainy season.)
- Bring a towel as you might get splashed with water (be cautious of slippery surfaces if wearing beach sandals).
- Always keep your valuables close to you, even while on the boat.
- Be extra vigilant against pickpockets at the boat dock (as it's a busy area with many vendors and tourists, ensure your belongings are secure).
