Wat Sri Chum

Wat Sri Chum, Sukhothai Province
This important historical site in the historical park is notable for its grand pavilion and the large Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture, "Phra Achana," a beautiful and sacred image that has earned it the nickname "the talking Buddha."

According to legend, when King Naresuan the Great led his army to attack Sukhothai, he held a water-pouring oath-taking ceremony at Wat Sri Chum. During the ceremony, a fortune was cast with Phra Achana, stating that if he won, Phra Achana would answer. When Phra Achana answered truthfully, the soldiers' morale was boosted, giving rise to the legend of the "talking Buddha," which has become famous among tourists and locals alike.
