🏯 Review of "Wat Mahathat", Sukhothai Historical Park (World Heritage)

Wat Mahathat is the grandest and most important historical site in Sukhothai Historical Park. Located in the heart of the old city, it served as the "Royal Temple" of the Sukhothai Kingdom and the former religious center of the kingdom.

✨ Magnificent and Unmissable Highlights

The Center of the Kingdom: Wat Mahathat is the largest temple (over 200 rai) and was once the site of important royal ceremonies and the center of Buddhism. It houses over 200 historical structures.

The main chedi, shaped like a lotus bud, is a key feature of the temple and a true example of Sukhothai art. This main chedi is intricate and exquisite, surrounded by eight smaller chedis, showcasing influences from various artistic traditions (Khmer, Sri Lankan, Pagan, and Lanna), reflecting Sukhothai's prosperity and cultural embrace.

A stucco Buddha image with disciples walking clockwise: At the base of the main chedi Stucco sculptures of disciples in the Anjuli (prayed hands) pose circumambulating the chedi are a beautiful sight and convey deep devotion.

Phra Attharot (Standing Buddha): A large standing Buddha image, 18 cubits high, enshrined in a pavilion flanking the main chedi on both sides (north and south). This Buddha image is an important Buddha image, as mentioned in Stone Inscription No. 1.

Sunrise/Sunset Viewpoint: Located in the heart of the old city and with a pond (traphang) in front, this is a popular spot for tourists to admire and photograph the Buddha image during the early morning or evening sunset, when the light beautifully illuminates the Buddha image and the ancient site.
